West London Trust Plans £29 Million Digital Strategy. A Vision for Smarter, Connected Care

West London NHS Trust is launching an ambitious £29 million, five-year digital transformation strategy (2025–2030) aimed at revolutionising patient care and staff experience. Submitted for board approval, the plan focuses on advanced digital infrastructure, improved data capabilities, and the integration of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), aligning with the NHS's goal of digitally-enabled health services.

This comprehensive strategy is built upon six core digital pillars designed to enhance clinical systems, bolster cybersecurity, leverage data, optimise existing tools, and empower both the workforce and patients. Crucially, the Trust emphasises that this technological upgrade must be driven by the needs of its community and staff. The transformation will be implemented in three distinct phases. Years 1-2 focus on building "Strong Digital Foundations," including standardising workflows, conducting digital literacy assessments, preparing for cloud migration, and establishing robust governance and cybersecurity profiles. Years 2-4 shift to "Optimisation," where the focus is on integrating systems like electronic patient records (EPR) and business intelligence tools to create data-driven workflows, ultimately reducing administrative overhead and improving clinical effectiveness. The final phase, Years 4-5, targets "System-Wide Transformation," aiming for seamless, proactive digital care through the implementation of predictive analytics, AI automation, and the integration of wearable devices, all supported by real-time data insights for early intervention and enhanced patient engagement.

Key strategic priorities underpinning the plan include ensuring Interoperability, allowing all systems to communicate effectively, to provide clinical teams with complete patient information crucial for safety and population health planning. Cybersecurity is a major focus, with the Trust prioritising robust security through internal capability building, training, and a hybrid cloud infrastructure. The strategy also embeds AI and Innovation, including embedding AI literacy, and conducting pilot projects like ambient voice technology demonstrations and AI testbeds with plans for future clinical and administrative evaluations. To ensure successful implementation and strong governance, the Trust has already appointed a Chief Information Officer (CIO) and a Head of Cyber Security.

The expected benefits are significant for both patients and staff. Patients will benefit from cloud-enabled systems, real-time dashboards, and predictive analytics that facilitate earlier, more effective clinical interventions and move care beyond traditional physical locations. For staff, the strategy aims to boost digital skills, reduce manual tasks through automation (e.g., Robotic Process Automation pilots), and allow clinicians to dedicate more time to direct patient care, fostering a digitally competent workforce. By enhancing productivity and effectiveness through sustained investment and strong governance, West London NHS Trust aspires to become a model of modern, digitally empowered care, delivering measurable improvements to patient outcomes, staff experience, and overall system performance, echoing broader regional strategies.
