A hospital trust somewhere in England is, right now, running a fundraising appeal to buy a piece of equipment that the government has already declared central to the future of the health service. Local businesses are being asked to sponsor a raffle. A patient charity is matching donations pound for pound. The target is a surgical robot, the kind of machine that can turn a week-long hospital stay after a hysterectomy into a same-day discharge. Two hundred miles away, in Cambridge, a robotics start-up building automated systems for Bosch's factory floors has just closed a funding round worth more than a hundred million pounds.
Both scenes are part of the same story, even though nobody planning either of them would recognise the other as relevant.
UK robotics companies have raised close to £190m across a dozen funding rounds so far this year, according to figures from Tracxn Technologies, comfortably ahead of the £110m raised across the whole of 2025 and a sharp acceleration from the £27m raised in 2024. Cambridge now accounts for more robotics funding than London and Bristol combined, driven overwhelmingly by two deals: Humanoid's £112m Series A and Automata's £33m Series C, which together made up three quarters of this year's total. Humanoid's money is going toward supporting Bosch's manufacturing lines. It is an industrial story, and by most measures a genuinely encouraging one for Britain's claim to a robotics industry worth building on.
What is missing from the list of 2026's headline rounds is instructive. Last year's largest UK robotics raise was CMR Surgical's £96.1m Series D, a Cambridge company whose Versius system is used across NHS urology, gynaecology and colorectal surgery. CMR does not appear among this year's big deals. That is not evidence of anything sinister happening to surgical robotics as a category, but it does illustrate where investor appetite currently sits, and it lands at an awkward moment for the NHS.
In April, the Royal College of Surgeons published analysis based on freedom of information requests to every NHS trust in England, describing robotic surgery provision as a postcode lottery. London trusts operate 28 robotic systems between them. The whole of the South West has six. There is no standard national funding model: trusts cobble together capital budgets, leasing agreements, cost-per-case arrangements and, in a meaningful number of cases, charitable fundraising, to acquire machines that NHS England itself has identified as essential to hitting its own targets. There is no national registry of where the equipment sits or how it is used, which makes it close to impossible for NHS England, the Department of Health and Social Care or individual integrated care boards to plan investment with any rigour.
This sits uneasily alongside the government's stated ambition. Robotics is one of five technologies singled out in the 10-Year Health Plan as central to reforming care delivery. NHS England wants half a million robot-assisted procedures a year by 2035, up from roughly 70,000 currently, framing the shift as central to cutting elective waiting lists and delivering the shorter hospital stays that ease bed pressure across the system. A procurement framework already exists, running to 2027, covering three approved suppliers and offering trusts flexibility on how they pay. The obstacle to scaling adoption is not a shortage of proven technology, nor a lack of private capital sloshing around the UK robotics sector generally. It is that the NHS has not built the financing architecture to let trusts use what already exists in a consistent way.
That distinction matters for how the funding figures should be read. A booming robotics sector is not, on its own, a health policy story. But when the same city producing the country's most eye-catching industrial robotics deals is also home to a surgical robotics manufacturer whose equipment sits unevenly across NHS trusts because of a funding structure nobody has fixed, the gap becomes a question about state capacity rather than technological readiness. Ministers can name robotics a national priority as often as they like. Until there is a funding model that does not depend on which trust happens to run the better charity appeal, the ambition and the reality will keep drifting apart.
