Palantir is preparing to launch a series of AI and data apprenticeships for NHS staff, with the programme expected to begin early next year. The initiative is designed to strengthen digital skills across the health service and support the expansion of the national Federated Data Platform, the infrastructure that will connect clinical and operational data across England.
The apprenticeships will target a broad mix of staff groups, including analysts, operational teams and clinicians who use data in everyday decision making. Participants will receive training in AI tools, data engineering, data management and the practical use of FDP applications.
Supporting the Federated Data Platform Rollout
The Federated Data Platform is one of NHS England’s most important digital investments. It is intended to allow trusts to link existing systems, view real time activity and manage patient pathways more efficiently. To achieve that ambition, workforce capability is critical. Many trusts have highlighted digital skills shortages as a barrier to taking full advantage of new national tools.
Palantir’s training offer is being framed as a practical response to that challenge. By equipping staff with the skills to analyse data, build workflows and use AI powered applications, the apprenticeships aim to increase confidence in the platform and improve local adoption.
Bridging Skills Gaps Across the System
Digital capability varies significantly across the NHS. Some organisations have mature data teams and advanced analytics solutions. Others rely on small analyst teams who cover multiple functions. The introduction of formal apprenticeships represents an effort to narrow that gap and ensure all trusts have a baseline level of digital literacy.
The programme is expected to include structured learning, on the job training and support from experienced mentors. Staff will be encouraged to apply new skills to live operational challenges such as bed management, elective recovery and discharge planning.
Preparing for a More Data Driven NHS
The launch of the apprenticeships comes as NHS England positions the Federated Data Platform as a foundation for future reforms. National leaders have argued that integrated data, advanced analytics and AI tools will be essential for improving productivity, reducing waiting times and giving clinicians a clearer picture of patient need.
If successful, the programme could help create a broader pipeline of digitally skilled staff who are able to support local improvement work and accelerate the adoption of national tools. The coming year will show whether the training offer enhances confidence in the FDP and helps the health service make better use of its growing digital infrastructure.
