The government has announced £28 million in funding to expand artificial intelligence diagnostic tools across the NHS, with the central aim of reducing the time it takes to diagnose lung cancer. The investment follows what officials describe as a successful deployment of AI-assisted chest X-ray analysis across roughly half of NHS Trusts in England, a programme that has so far contributed to faster diagnoses or all-clears for more than four million patients.
The largest portion of the funding, £20 million, will be used to extend this technology to every NHS Trust in England by 2029. The tools work alongside radiologists, analysing chest X-rays to flag cases that require urgent attention. Early data from current deployments indicates that average analysis times for the most complex cases have fallen from eight days to four. The NHS carries out over seven million chest X-rays each year, making it one of the most significant diagnostic pathways for identifying lung cancer, the leading cause of cancer death in England.
Peter Allinson, 59, from Manchester, was referred to Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust after experiencing severe breathlessness during a hill walk. Assessed using the AI X-ray tool, he received a diagnosis of sarcoidosis and began treatment within two weeks. "The speed of the diagnosis made a real difference," he said. "I feel like I've been given my life back." His case illustrates what faster scan analysis can mean in practice, not only for cancer patients but for those with other serious respiratory conditions identified through the same pathway.
A further £8.1 million, administered through the National Institute for Health and Care Research, will fund trials of six additional AI and digital technologies across twelve NHS Trusts and one GP partnership in England and Scotland. The technologies target a wider range of conditions, including heart failure, stroke, lung infections and tic disorders, and involve analysis of CT scans and ECGs as well as X-rays. Technologies that demonstrate effectiveness in these trials are intended to follow the same path to wider NHS adoption as the chest X-ray tools.
Health Secretary James Murray said the rollout represented a practical step in shifting the NHS from analogue to digital infrastructure. The funding sits within the government's AI Diagnostic Fund, which forms part of the Prime Minister's AI Exemplars programme.
Clinical organisations responded with qualified support. The Royal College of Radiologists said investment in proven technologies was welcome given the growing demand for diagnostic services, but stressed that implementation must be clinician-led and evidence-based. Cancer Research UK echoed this, saying that AI tools have genuine potential to improve scan analysis times, while noting that progress depends on sufficient workforce capacity and well-designed care pathways. The college was direct on one point: radiologists must remain central to diagnosis and clinical decision-making.
The announcement aligns with targets set out in the National Cancer Plan, which includes a commitment to ensuring more patients begin treatment within 62 days of a GP referral. Cutting the time taken to report chest X-rays is seen as a material step toward meeting that standard, particularly given the volume of scans processed annually and the pressure on radiology departments.
The NIHR also announced the launch of its Innovation Catalyst this week, a funding mechanism designed to support promising technologies through regulatory approval and into broader health service adoption, covering medtech, digital health, biotech and pharmaceuticals.
Whether the 2029 target for full Trust coverage proves achievable will depend in part on infrastructure investment at individual Trust level. Matthew Hopkins of NHS Alliance noted that sustained capital funding and staff training will be necessary for organisations to deploy the tools safely and effectively. The technology, in other words, is ready. The harder work lies in the implementation.
