

Abcam, the global supplier of validated antibodies and assay solutions, has expanded its collaboration with Genedata, the Swiss enterprise software developer, in a move designed to modernise how new antibodies are developed and to lay the groundwork for artificial intelligence applications in biological research. The initiative will see Genedata's flagship platform, Genedata Biologics, integrated across Abcam's international research and development operations, with the aim of accelerating the creation of antibodies and standardising the data that underpins them.
The rollout is already under way. Genedata Biologics has been implemented at Abcam's headquarters in the United Kingdom and at key sites in China and the United States, creating what the companies describe as a unified data foundation linking cross-border teams. Rather than each site operating on separate systems and disconnected records, researchers across the three regions will now work from a single digital infrastructure, allowing scientific data generated in one location to be accessed and built upon in another. Abcam and Genedata are both owned by Danaher, the American conglomerate, which has been pushing its portfolio companies towards shared digital platforms as a means of extracting efficiency across its life sciences holdings.
At a practical level, the platform is designed to digitise laboratory workflows that have traditionally relied on fragmented spreadsheets and site-specific systems. It tracks biological samples throughout their development lifecycle, manages the secure storage and analysis of antibody characterisation data, and enforces consistent quality-control standards regardless of where in the world the work is being carried out. For a company that brings roughly 500 new antibodies to market each year, the ability to trace a sample's history and validation record across borders is not a cosmetic upgrade but an operational necessity as volumes grow.
The strategic logic behind the expansion is twofold. In the near term, the companies say the platform will let Abcam scale its development capacity to meet rising demand for antibodies across an increasingly diverse range of research targets and applications. In the longer term, the structured datasets generated by the platform are intended to serve as the foundation for training future AI models capable of accelerating scientific discovery, a goal that has become a near-universal ambition among life sciences companies but one that depends entirely on the quality and consistency of the underlying data.
Kaveh Kahen, president of Abcam, said the company needed to continue scaling and evolving its development capabilities to keep pace with researchers seeking high-quality antibodies across a growing range of targets. He said building on Genedata's platform would give Abcam the automation, connectivity and flexibility required to support its global R&D operations, describing the collaboration as creating a stronger foundation for data-driven innovation. Othmar Pfannes, president of Genedata, framed the partnership as a shared commitment to applying data and technology to scientific work, arguing that combining Abcam's expertise in antibody development with Genedata's platform would let scientific teams collaborate more effectively and generate insights at scale, while building the foundation for AI-powered discovery.
The companies present the ultimate beneficiaries as the researchers who depend on validated reagents for their own work. A more connected, better-governed data environment at Abcam should, in principle, shorten the time between an antibody being developed and it reaching the laboratories that need it, while improving confidence in its reliability. Whether that promise translates into measurably faster turnaround or simply a more efficient back office remains to be seen, but the direction of travel is consistent with a wider pattern across the life sciences sector, in which the value of physical products is increasingly bound up with the digital infrastructure used to produce and validate them.
